The Duties and Qualifications for District Attorney Investigator I are listed below are necessary to successful prosecution of case assignments but are directed by the District Attorney or his designee without overtime compensation and may require evening and weekend hours.
Duties and Qualifications outlined below:
1. Conduct Felony and Misdemeanor investigations as directed by Chief Investigator and Assistant District Attorneys and possess the necessary skill level and experience gained after a minimum of 15 years as a certified police officer to carry out assigned tasks. With a minimum of 10 years working in a recognized criminal investigation division the equivalent of the Syracuse Police Departments – C.I.D, OCSO C.I.D., New
2. Conduct interviews and/or interrogations as needed to prepare case file and reports.
3. Affect the arrest and process of perpetrators and prepare all reports, court documents and arraignment procedures
4. Assist in trial preparation of cases as directed by the District Attorney or his/her designee.
5. Prepare Search Warrants and associated reports. Executed Search Warrants, prepare raid instructions and conduct briefings for law enforcement participants. Must have an excellent and working knowledge of the Criminal Procedure Law sections 690.05 through 690.55 pertaining to Search Warrants which in most probability involve evenings and weekends without overtime compensation.
6. Collect and document all evidence obtained during the course of investigation or search warrant execution. Prepare evidence collection reports and necessary laboratory request forms to be submitted with evidence for analysis. Handle and retrieve case evidence for trials.
7. Testify in grand jury, hearings, trials and serve as an expert witness within the training and scope of this investigator’s expertise.
8. Must possess a positive attitude and be willing to responded 24 hours a day 7 days a week at the call of the District Attorney. Must have a valid and offense free New York State Drivers License, Military or a valid license from other state of residency.
9. Candidate must not have any criminal history in any of the 50 United States. Or while serving with a component of the United States Military.
10. Maintain a liaison with local, state and federal law enforcement personnel to curtail gang related violence, narcotics and firearms related trafficking. Must be willing to work on special investigations without overtime compensation.
11. Should possess a working knowledge of and assist in the preparation of eavesdropping affidavits and warrants. Report investigative progress to the court as described in section 700.05 through 700.70 of the New York State Criminal Procedure Law of the State of New York and to be able to testify as an expert witness. Must be physically able to arrest and take into custody known perpetrators and subjects wanted on criminal warrants with assistance of another investigator or on your own.
12. Be proficient in the use of his/her service pistol and must pass firearms an accredited certification course a minimum of (2) twice a year as required by New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.
Minimal Qualifications:
1. The candidate must have been designated a Sergeant or above with an accredited police agency or the candidate must have passed the civil service examination for confidential DA Investigator I, if required and appointed under the rules of employment designated by the New York State Civil Service Commission. This candidate must be certified as a police officer in his/her prior employment within the State of New York and registered as such with the Division of Criminal Justice Services having completed MPTC (Municipal Police Training Course) or its equivalent within 2 years.
2. The candidate must have a minimum of 4 years experience as an Investigator/Detective or obtaining the rank of Sergeant must have shown a propensity and desire to excel in the field of Criminal Investigation. Must have been involved with felony and major case investigations or six (6) years experience as a Detective working on Felony or Major Crimes which include Homicide, Narcotics and Weapons offenses. Must have written confirmation of said experience or its equivalent training in the form of police in-service or from organizations skilled in the training of Investigator/Detectives that are accepted as certificates of training excepted by the New York State Criminal Justice Services.
3. The candidate must have a minimum of 3 years working in an undercover capacity as an Investigator/ Detective in a duly recognized narcotics enforcement unit. Must possess the skills and experience to work on gang related matters or any authorized investigation without constant supervision.
4. Candidate must be proficient in firearms and qualified to operate both pistol and shotgun type weapons. He/She must maintain semi-annual firearm proficiency qualifications as directed by the Division of Criminal Justice Services. Must have a complete understanding of section 35.10 of the Penal Law of the State of New York as it pertains to the use of Deadly Physical Force.
5. The candidate must work well in a Task Force environment which includes multiple agencies or if necessary for a Supervisor from one of the assigned agencies, which includes evenings and weekends, assignments. Must have exceptional writing skills to prepare search warrants, eavesdropping warrants and well as daily written reports, will be required to submit a writing sample of these skills.
6. Candidate is required to reside in Onondaga County or an adjoining County.
Salary Range for DA Investigator I is $40,132 to $56,496
Confidential District Attorney Investigator II

Must meet the qualifications of Confidential Investigator I – but in addition the candidate must have supervised a team of Criminal Investigators with a minimum of 10 years experience or a minimum of 4 years experience within the District Attorney’s Investigations Bureau.
Assign investigations, direct and provide leads to subordinate investigators during ongoing investigations and daily office operations.
Candidate must show a positive leadership and supervisory roll as directed by the District Attorney or the Chief Investigator.

Confidential District Attorney Investigator III (Senior Investigator)
Duties & Qualifications
The candidate must possess the qualities of both Confidential Investigator I and Investigator II as listed but must also in addition have the following Qualifications:
Must, have a minimum of 3 years tenure in the position of Confidential Investigator II.
Must show a constant integrity, work ethic, and outstanding work office related knowledge.
Must, be familiar with the maintenance and review of evidence logs, confidential funds, case assignment logs.
Must be familiar with the CNY Leads case reporting system to review, approve and submit completed cases.
